What Do You Do?
What do you do -
when someone you know
lies bleeding and broken on the floor?
Do you let it show –
let the rage and sorrow scream, beg for more –
let the heartache flow
through every muscle until you’re sore,
tired and cold as snow?
What do you do –
when someone gives in
to the desolate hunger eating them away?
Do you fake a grin –
smile even though the world has changed, gone gray –
smile ‘til it hurts the skin
cracking on your face like clay,
shaped and fired by sin?
What do you do –
when someone you love
makes the decision to die?
Do you pray to heaven-above –
plead for the answers, dear God why –
plead for the truth on wings of a dove
soaring peacefully into a life gone awry,
tainted and toxic as foxglove?
