Thief

Thief
Angie Lisle

You came like a thief in the night,
Slipped in the bed where I rested,
Whispered words that felt so right –
Words that couldn't be tested,
Since you always left before the morning light,
Naught but a dream for which I quested.
Why did you come to me,
If this was never meant to be?

You were a midnight rogue who walked away,
Couldn't finish the game that you started,
Closed yourself to the words I had to say –
Words that left me broken-hearted,
Since you never came to me by day,
Naught but a wish from which I parted.
Why did you come to me,
If this was never meant to be?
Why did you come to me,
The girl who wasn't free?

You came to me as a shadowed liar,
knowing that you would never be mine,
Murmured words that set me on fire –
but it was all just another line,
Since all you wanted stemmed from desire,
Naught but a fantasy for which I'd pine.
Why did you come to me,
If this was never meant to be?
Why did you come to me,
The girl who wasn't free?
Why did you come to me,
The one you weren't supposed to see?
